Bulk Suspend Users via .CSV file

Bulk Suspend Users via .CSV file

You need Admin access to be able to perform this action.

This guide shows how to suspend multiple users from the site. Use .CSV files to make changes to a large number of users.

Create a .CSV File containing the users you wish to suspend.

Sign in to your site with your Administrator details.

Step 1: Navigate to Site administration UsersAccountsBulk user actions

Step 2: Go to new filter and press on show less or show more this will hide or bring up a full list of filters you can apply.

Step 3: Choose the filters you want, and click "Add Filter" at the bottom of the list. A useful filter is the "Last Access" filter, which selects people based on when they last logged into the site. After clicking, it will make a list of users who match those filters. Review the list and adjust the filters until it includes all the users you want to suspend.

Step 4: Click on the "Add all" button.

Step 5: From the dropdown menu, select Download, then click Go.

Step 6: You'll see a new page, choose "Comma Separated Values (.CSV)" from the dropdown menu, then click on the download button.

Editing the .CSV File

After downloading the .CSV file, you'll need to edit it in Excel. To start, open the downloaded .CSV file using Excel. Once opened your file should look like this:

Step 7: Beside the rightmost column heading, which in this case is profile_field_manageremail, type "suspended" into a separate box.

Step 8: After finishing, put a value "1" in each column. You can do this by typing a 1 and dragging the small dot at the bottom right corner of the cell downward. The outcome should appear like this:

Step 9: Save this file with a new name and choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) as the file type. Ensure you can locate this file for the next step.

Uploading the .CSV File

Step 10: Go back to your Moodle site and navigate to: Site administrationUsersAccountsUpload users

Step 11: Press choose file and upload the .CSV file you have just created.

Step 12: Make sure to choose these two from the dropdown menu (Upload type, and Allow suspending and activating of accounts) to proceed with the suspension; you can answer other dropdowns based on your preference.

Step 13: Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Upload users"; once completed, the selected users will be suspended.
