How to Setup a Checklist Activity

The checklist module allows a teacher to create a checklist/todo list/task list for their students to work through.

How to Add a Checklist Activity

To create a Checklist activity within a course page follow the steps below:

Step 1: To start making changes on your course page, click on the toggle 'Edit Mode' to turn editing on.


Step 2: Once the edit mode is activated, you can either choose to edit an existing topic or add a new one.
Click on Add an activity or resource.


Step 3: You may search or choose an activity. Select Checklist   from the list.


Step 4: Fill out the information needed and adjust the settings for the Checklist Activity.


Checklist*
(Mandatory field) enter the name of the Checklist activity in the Name text box.
Introduction
Enter a relevant introduction in the "introduction" text area that describes the Checklist activity if needed.
Display description on course page
(checkbox) If enabled, the description of this activity will be shown on the course page.





Availability
The availability option permits students to view and access assignments and resources, there are two options available:

• Show on course page
• Hide from students

ID number
The ID number can be entered to reference the same ID number from a third-party package especially gradebook. Otherwise, the field may be left blank.
Force LanguageIf you force a language in a course, the interface of Moodle in this course will be in this particular language, even if a student has selected a different preferred language in his/her personal profile.


Teachers may restrict students from accessing lessons and resources based upon a set of conditions. These conditions may be based on whether an activity has been completed or not, date restrictions when lessons can commence, a specified grade to be achieved, a certain user profile, or a set of nested restrictions based on the below settings.

Restrictions can be one, two or all of the following criterion:




Completion tracking
There are three options available:

• Do not indicate activity completion
• Students can manually mark the activity as completed
• Show activity as complete when conditions are met

Require view
(checkbox) If enabled, student must view this activity to complete it.
Expect completed on
This setting specifies the date when the activity is expected to be completed.



Tags
Tags will allow students and teachers to connect to other courses and content being offered.


Competencies will not be available unless they have been set up at a course level. Administrators can set up competency frameworks and add competencies within the framework. Teachers can also add competencies to courses and course activities.

Course competencies
Course competencies allow you to search for competencies that you’d like to link to your existing activity.
Upon activity completion
There are four options to select once an assignment has been completed:

• Do nothing
• Attach evidence
• Send for review
• Complete the competency

Send content change notificationTick the box to notify course participants about this new or changed activity or resource. Only users who can access the activity or resource will receive notiofication.

Step 5: Once everything is set, click Save and return to course.

The Checklist activity that has been created will now be displayed in the section where you selected ‘Add an activity or resource’.
How to Add Checklist Items
To add Checklist items on your Checklist Activity, simply click on the checklist activity you have created then go to the Edit checklist tab.

To add a checklist item, type in the item name and then click the Add button:



Depending on the activated settings during the checklist activity setup, the following functions will be available for your checklist activity.

Link to

This would create an icon beside the items you have added that would route users to a specific link that could either be on the same page or on a new window:

Text Colour
You can change checklist items text colour to the following available options:
  1. Red
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Purple
  5. Black
Pencil Icon
You can use this to edit existing checklist items
Edit dates
You can use this if checklist items added are time bound
Required Toggle
You can choose to require participants to accomplish specific checklist items, tick if required, otherwise untick if not.
Arrow Keys
You can control the indent (left and right arrows) and sequence (up and down arrows) of the added checklist items
Delete bin
You can delete unwanted checklist items using this button
Green + Icon
You can squeeze in checklist items in between previously created ones.

Once done adding checklist items, you can view the checklist items on the Checklist tab:



Depending on the activated settings during the checklist activity setup, the following functions will be available on the Checklist tab.

Trainer tick boxOnly visible to trainers - used to mark specific checklist item as complete
User tick boxDepending on the setup implemented, users can use this to mark the checklist item's completion.
CommentsDepending on the setup implemented, users can add their respective comments here.

To view participants progress, and add comments for all checklist items for a participant:
AlertThis action requires Trainer level of access to the specific course

Step 1: Go to View progress tab and then click on the + magnifying button:



Step 2: On this page, you can freely toggle each checklist item for this specific student as either Yes or No,

Step 3: Should you wish to add comments for each checklist item, click on the Add comments button.

This button will provide you extra field/s where you can enter comments per checklist item/s.

Marking Checklist Items in bulk

This action requires Trainer level of access to the specific course

Step 1: From the View progress tab, click on the Show full details button:

Step 2: Here you can see the full list of checklist items available, click the Edit checks button to proceed with the bulk marking function.



Step 3: Here you have the option to Toggle the whole Column as Yes or No (for all participants), Toggle the whole Row as Yes or No (For all checklist items for a specific participant) or utilise the Drop down individually per checklist item. Once done make sure to hit Save 




Extra Feature: Require adding Comment
In some scenarios, if you would want to ensure that you won't miss adding details about specific checklist item/s and to add the capability to add overall comment/feedback about the whole checklist activity. 

You have the option to require adding a comment per checklist item (Edit Checklist tab → Requires comment tick box)


You will now see a black chat bubble beside the checklist items that requires comment.

You can also quickly determine the checklist items that requires comment from the Show full details tab: 


Finally, you will also have the ability to see checklist items that requires comment and the ability to add Overall Comments (at the very bottom part of the page) on the participant's progress page:
