How to Setup a Folder Resource v2

Overview

This tutorial provides an overview of how to set up a Folder resource in Moodle to organise and share multiple files within a course. It covers key configuration options and considerations for presenting course materials clearly and accessibly to Australian learners. You’ll also learn how to structure folders effectively, manage file visibility, and create a consistent resource area that helps learners quickly locate the materials they need.

A folder can be used to:

Organise a collection of files on a specific topic for example, past examination papers in PDF format or image files for use in student projects.
Provide a shared upload area for teachers on the course page. The folder can be kept hidden from students so that only teachers can access it.

Important: You need Trainer, LMS Admin, Manager access before you can perform this action.

Step Tutorial

1. To start making changes on your course page, click on the toggle to turn Edit Mode on.

2. Once the edit mode is turned on, choose which section you like to add content and select Activity or resource.

3. The activity/resource chooser will open. You can locate the Folder Resource manually or type its name in the search bar.

4. Once you select the Folder Resource, provide the information required for the initial setup. The first step is to enter a name for the Folder Resource.

Name*	This will be the name of the Folder Resource.
Description	This content will appear at the top of the Folder Resource.
Display description on course page	When enabled, the description will also appear on the course page, directly below the link to the Folder Resource.

Display folder contents	On a separate page – The activity will appear as a clickable link on the course page and open on a separate page. Inline on a course page – The contents will be displayed directly within the course page.
Show subfolders expanded	If enabled content of the subfolder is already displayed
Show download folder button	A Download folder button will be available, allowing users to download all the contents as a ZIP file.
Force download of files	If enabled, clicking on the content will download it instead of displaying it in the browser (for certain image and HTML files).

Availability	Show on course page – make this activity available to students. Hide on course page – make this activity unavailable to students.
ID number	Leave this field empty if you don’t need to identify this activity for features such as grade calculations or custom reporting.
Force language	If your LMS supports multiple languages, you can choose a specific language for displaying this activity. This setting applies to the user interface, not the activity content.

Access restrictions

Access restrictions control access to the activity based on the conditions set.

Students must manually mark the activity as done	A Mark as done button will be displayed in the activity.
Add requirements	View the activity - The activity must be opened to be completed.

Tags	Tags allow students and teachers to connect with related courses and content.

Course competencies	Selection for existing course competencies on the LMS
Upon activity completion:	Do nothing Attach evidence Send for review Complete the competency
Send content change notification	Notify course participants about this new or changed activity or resource.

5. Save the Folder Resource.

Save and return to course	Save the Folder Activity and return to course page
Save and display	Save the Folder Activity and display it.
Cancel	Disregard the creation of Folder Activity

What is the Folder size upload limit?

The file size upload limit for a Folder resource is controlled by multiple settings. The lowest applicable limit determines the maximum file size that can be uploaded.

Site-level limit (hard ceiling)
This is the absolute maximum file size permitted across the entire LMS. No other setting can exceed this limit.
Course-level limit
This limit must be equal to or lower than the site-level limit. It applies to activities and resources within the course.

How to rename uploaded files in Folder?

Step 1: Find the folder where the file you want to rename is saved.

Step 2. Select the Edit button to display the uploaded files.

Step 3: Select the uploaded file you want to rename.

Step 4: Enter the new file name and save your changes.

Important: Keep the file extension so the system can recognise the file type. Common extensions include .csv, .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx and .txt.
