How to Setup and Take Attendance v2

How to Setup and Take Attendance v2

You need Trainer or Manager access before you can perform this action. Teachers and students must be enrolled in the course.
The attendance activity module enables a teacher to take attendance during class and students to view their own attendance records.

The teacher can create multiple sessions and can mark the attendance status as "Present", "Absent", "Late", or "Excused" or modify the statuses to suit their needs.

Reports are available for the entire class or individual students.

Setting Up Attendance

To create an Attendance activity within a course page follow the steps below:

Step 1: At the upper right of your course page, toggle 'Edit Mode' to turn editing on.

Step 2: Go to the section/tile on your course page where you want to add the Attendance module. Click Add an activity or resource > then select Attendance, and supply all required details.

On the required details, Scroll down to the Grade section. Set the number of points you want attendance to be worth if the grade is required or choose None if you don't want the activity to be graded. Later in the setup, you can then indicate how many points will be deducted for each absence or late. When you’re done, click Save and display. (If you clicked Save and return, you can navigate back to Attendance by clicking it on your course page.)

Step 3: Once clicked, you will be directed to a new screen, from there click add a session.

Step 4: Fill in the date of the first class meeting. Add the date and time. You also have the option to create a calendar event if you prefer.

Attendance also allows you to repeat sessions multiple times. On the same page, click the button to repeat the session above as follows.” Place checkmarks next to the days your class meet (even if it is just one day) and set up the last day your class meets. Finally, click Add.

Taking Attendance

Once done, you’ll now see all your class sessions. You may find it easiest to have them displayed by Week or Day. You can make that change in the upper right. To take attendance, click on the right arrow to the right of the class meeting.

To quickly mark all students present, click P at the top of the list. To mark students individually, click on the appropriate circle. A key to the abbreviations appears at the bottom left of the screen. When you finish, click Save attendance. You can go back into a day’s attendance at any time, make changes, and save again.

Note: You have the option to change the status options displayed. To do this, from the main attendance page, click Status set at the top. You can hide or delete options you don’t use, add new options, or reorder them. The point values here won’t matter unless you set attendance to be part of the grade. Click Update once done.

To see the number of absences a student has, click on any attendance that has been taken > then click the name of the student > and the student’s attendance history will display.
