How to Use Conditional Logic (C. Logic) in Online Assessment Forms

Overview
Conditional Logic is a feature within Online Learning Assessment that allows administrators to control whether certain fields are displayed, hidden, or set to read-only based on predefined conditions. This enables administrators to display only the fields relevant to a learner, hide fields when specific criteria are met, or prevent fields from being edited, creating a more dynamic and controlled assessment experience.

Step Tutorial
1. In the LMS course, add an Assessment activity, then open the editor.


2. Drag either a Radio Button or a Check Box into the editor. A Radio Button allows the user to select only one answer, while a Check Box allows the user to select multiple answers. In this example, we will use the Radio Button.


3. In the Radio Button’s properties, add an appropriate label. You may add a question or any statement that leads to the available options.


4. After that, proceed to the Input tab and add the available options.

Warning
IMPORTANT: As mentioned above, the conditions will be based on the options selected from the Radio Buttons and Check Boxes. It is therefore important to remember the name of the Radio Button or Check Box, along with its available options.

5. You may now add the fields that will depend on the Radio Button or Check Box. These fields can be set to Shown, Hidden, or Read-only based on the selected option. In this example, we will use the Video Upload Field and Video Record Field to match the answers to the options we created. However, you may use whichever fields are appropriate for your requirements.


6. In the Video Upload Field’s properties, navigate to the C. Logic tab.


7. Set the necessary conditions for the field:
a. Turn on the toggle so that the condition will run.
b. Specify whether the field will Show, Hide, or be Read-only. Also, set whether all conditions must be met or whether any condition can be met.
c. Add the logic:
i. In the first dropdown, select the appropriate Radio Button or Check Box. In our example, we only have one, which is named radiobutton4354.
ii. In the second dropdown, select whether the condition should be “is” or “is not”.
iii. In the third and final dropdown, select the desired option or answer that will satisfy the condition.
In this example, we want the Video Upload Field to be available only if the student’s answer to Radio Button 4354 is “Submitting a video”.


8. Repeat the same steps for the remaining fields you want to apply a condition to. For reference, here are the settings for the Video Record Field. The condition specifies that the Video Record Field will only be available if the student’s answer to Radio Button 4354 is “Recording a video”.


9. From time to time, after making changes, click the Save button to ensure that your changes are saved and are not accidentally missed.


Here’s how the assessment will look in the student’s view:

1. No selection – both the Video Upload Field and Video Record Field are hidden.


2. “Submitting a video” is selected – only the Video Upload Field is shown.


3. “Recording a video” is selected – only the Video Record Field is shown.
