Note: You need Teacher or Manager access before you can perform this action. Before you start to mark an assignment please ensure that you have hidden the grades area from students Grader Report - Hiding and releasing Grades / Feedback to Students. This will ensure that students all receive their grades at the same time. If you are using the blind (anonymous) marking function then you will need to do the same however you will also need to click reveal identities in order to release grades to students.
Marking workflow, when enabled in a Moodle Assignment activity allows marks and grades to go through a series of workflow stages before being released to students. This allows for multiple rounds of marking and allows marks to be released to all students at the same time. Facilitating multiple markers is more effectively achieved by using groups.
Enabling Marking Workflow
Step 1: Turn editing on
Step 2: Select Edit>>Edit settings alongside the relevant assignment.
Step 3: Scroll down to see Grades settings in the assignment and set Use marking workflow to Yes
Step 4: Scroll to the bottom of the assignment and click Save and display.
Use Marking Workflow
When set to Yes, teachers will be able to specify the stage they are at in their grading of individual assignments.
Step 1: When you are ready to start marking select the relevant assignment and click View all submissions.
Step 2: Scroll to the bottom of the page and under Options select All to get all assignments to display on one page.
Step 3: Select all the students or a selection of students that you want to set a marking state for.
Step 4: Scroll to the bottom of the page click on the downward arrow alongside With selected...and select Set marking workflow state.
Step 5: Set the appropriate marking workflow state which at this stage is likely to be In marking.
One advantage of using marking workflow is that the grades can be hidden from students until they are set to 'Released'. The actual list of steps are:
- Not marked (the marker has not yet started)
- In marking (the marker has started but not yet finished)
- Marking completed (the marker has finished but might need to go back for checking/corrections)
- In review (the marking is now with the teacher in charge for quality checking)
- Ready for release (the teacher in charge is satisfied with the marking but wait before giving students access to the marking)
- Released (the student can access the grades/feedback)
If marking workflow is set to Yes, it is possible to enable marking allocation. This means that teachers can be selected to grade or review the submitted work of specific students. Colleagues can monitor progress through the displayed marking workflow states:
