How to Add Quiz Questions

Idea
Overview
Adding questions to a quiz activity is a vital step in creating effective quiz assessments in the Learning Management System (LMS).

In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of adding questions to a quiz activity, including how to select question types, organize questions, and ensure your quiz is properly set up for student attempts.

InfoNOTE: You need Teacher, Manager, or Admin access before you can perform this action.

Notes
Step Tutorial
Before adding questions, ensure that a quiz activity has already been created in your course.
For instructions, refer to: How to Setup a Quiz Activity v2
Creating a New Question
1. Open the quiz activity and navigate to the Questions tab.

2. On the Questions page, click the Add button located at the lower-right corner of the page, then select + a new question.

The question type window will appear. Select the desired question type then click Add.

To learn more about available question types, refer to: Question Types Available in a Quiz Activity

3. Repeat the above steps to add additional questions to the quiz.

NOTE: Once a question is created, an icon appears indicating its question type. Hover over the icon to view the specific type.

4. After adding questions, you can perform the following actions on each question on the Questions page:
  1. Edit - Click the pencil icon next to the question name to edit the existing question.

  1. Preview - Click the magnifying glass icon to preview how the question will appear to students.

  1. Delete - Click the bin/trash icon to delete a question.

Info
NOTE: To delete multiple questions, click Select multiple items, tick the checkboxes next to the questions you want to remove, or click Select all, then delete the selected questions.
Adding Pre-Made Questions
1. From question bank - If questions have already been created by other teachers or administrators in the course or from previous quizzes, you can reuse them by selecting + from question bank.

The question bank will display all available quiz questions for the course.
To view questions from other categories, select the category and click Apply filters.

To add another filtering condition, click the + Add condition.

To add a question from the question bank, click the icon next to an individual question to add it to the quiz. (1 in screenshot below)
To add multiple questions, tick the checkbox beside each question (or the top checkbox to select all - 2 in screenshot below), then click Add selected questions to the quiz.

2. Random question - If your question bank contains questions, you can add random questions by selecting + a random question.

You can add one or more random questions by choosing the number and category from the question bank. Click Add random question once done.
Quiz Layout
When creating the quiz activity, you can choose in the Layout section whether each question appears on a new page or after a specified number of questions, before adding the quiz questions.
You can also adjust the layout after the questions have been added to the quiz activity. This approach may be more convenient, as it allows you to organise the quiz questions once they have all been added.

Managing Page Breaks
To add a page break, click the + icon between questions.

To remove a page break, click the icon where the page break appears.

Repaginating the Quiz
To change the layout of the entire quiz, click the Repaginate button.

Select the desired number of questions per page, then click Go to apply the changes.

Reordering Questions
Questions can be reordered by dragging and dropping them using the crosshairs icon.
Section Headings
1. For the first page, click the pencil icon at the top of the questions list and enter a section heading.
2. To add headings to additional pages, click Add and select + a new section heading.

Randomising Question Order
To randomise the order in which questions appear to students, tick the Shuffle checkbox at the top right of the Questions page.

Assigning points to questions
Each question’s point value can be adjusted using the box to the right of the question. By default, each question is worth 1 point.

The quiz Maximum grade is set to 10.00 by default. To change it, enter a new value and click Save.

WarningIMPORTANT: Ensure that the Maximum grade aligns with the Total of marks value. This helps prevent grading discrepancies and ensures clear results.

And that's how to add questions in a quiz activity!

FAQs
Can I change the quiz layout after adding questions?
Yes. You can modify the quiz layout at any time by adding or removing page breaks, repaginating the quiz, or adjusting how many questions appear per page.

However, it is important to note that once a quiz attempt is available, changing the layout will no longer be possible.
How do random questions work in a quiz?
Random questions are pulled from a selected category in the question bank. Each student may receive different questions, helping reduce predictability.
What happens if I edit a question that is already used in a quiz?
Editing a question will update it within the quiz. If the question is shared from the question bank, the changes may also affect other quizzes that use the same question.

InfoNOTE: When a quiz question is updated and an attempt has already been made, the updated version will only appear in new attempts. Existing attempts and re-attempts will still use the previous version of the question.
